Lolita's Personality

They can become bored quickly and will discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't involved enough with them. Macaws that are not properly socialized may become aggressive and even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so that the macaw doesn't feel threatened.
Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that are a joy to play with, interact with, and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours per day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games, experimenting with tricks and listening to music. They love going to playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but is also a great companion for children.
Despite their adorable nature they are loud and can cause a disturbance to those who live near. They can make ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or near children who might be scared by their roar.
This species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.
Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets, require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and recognize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can help accelerate the process and help correct any behavior issues.
Lolita's Care
For a long time activists have been calling for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 movie Free Willy sparked public outrage over the reintegration of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists believed that Lolita would have a similar fate. However, she was never given the chance to go back to sea.
The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They sabotage her health by making her perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, causing her to lose weight and harming her immune system. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is only one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.
Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative, on a plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the rest of her days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.
If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild.
