Glaucous Macaw
The glaucous Macaw is among the rarest birds in the world. It is considered Critically Endangered and could be extinct in the wild.
The bird has been reported by aviculturists from various countries however the most recent sighting was reported in 1992. This alleged sighting occurred in southwestern Paraguay close to the city of Corrientes. The bird was male.
Origin

The Glaucous macaw is an endangered parrot species that is native South America. This majestic bird is distinguished by a blue feather pattern, and a strong beak capable of cracking open nuts and seeds. Glaucous Macaws form monogamous long-term pairs and both parents tend the chicks. They feed their chicks regurgitated food for the first couple of weeks after birth, before they begin to eat solid foods as they develop. Parents are also responsible for teaching the young macaws to fly and hunt.

It is estimated that the glaucous macaw was extinct in the 1800s because of logging and cattle grazing of yatay palm (Butia yatay) areas, where the birds typically gathered their food. It is believed that the glaucous macaw has returned to captivity in the wild, where it is raised alongside its larger relative Lear's macaw.
In terms of habitat the glaucous macaw can be found in subtropical forests of South America. This is completely untrue until it can be verified with hard evidence. Many experts have concluded that the bird is likely extinct as there are no records in the last century. However, they have always been willing to accept a small chance of its survival. If it does survive, it is extremely unlikely to reach large numbers.
Habitat
The Glaucous Macaw is a magnificent bird, known for its huge size and turquoise-blue coloring. The tail and wings are long, which aids in its graceful and agile movements. It is also a symbol of loyalty and love. Its beak, which is predominantly black, has a distinctive shape and allows it to break seeds and nuts. These are a large part its diet.
IUCN has classified the Glaucous Macaw as Critically Endangered. It notes that there is a small population of the bird and it is in high-risk of extinction. The species was once quite widespread, but today it is found in northern Argentina and southern Paraguay, north-eastern Uruguay and Brazil from Parana state southwards, where it nestted in cliffs along major rivers.

A re-examination of the historical records suggests that this species was rather generalist in its habitat preferences and preferred savanna habitat intermingled with palm "islands" and areas of riparian forest along river systems. It was a specialized feeder of palm fruit particularly those of the yatay (or chatay) palm (Butia). However it also ate ripe and unripe fruits, nuts, berries, and even vegetable matter. It nestled on steep slopes and cliffs, sometimes in tree cavities and laid an average clutch of two eggs.
As with other parrots this bird was social and was probably gregarious. It was said that it could live to 14.4 years in captivity and was a reliable breeder who reproduced year after. Its life expectancy in the wild was perhaps between 50 and 80 years. This species was a formidable seed disperser and may have contributed to the success of the yatay palm within its natural habitats.
Feeding
The Glaucous Macaw (Anodorhynchus glaucus) is among the most magnificent of all the parrot species and its presence has an enormous impact on its environment. This large South American parrot is known for its bright blue feathers, bright yellow eyes, and the teardrop-shaped lipped on the lower portion of its beak.
Up until recently, very little was known about the food habits and diet of the Glaucous macaw. The first references to the subject I have discovered are in two books by H.W. Both of these are about the Hyacinthine Macaw Anodorhynchus Aureolarius. There is no reason to believe that they do not apply to this species.
It is probable that the Glaucous Macaw was a specialized for the consumption of palm nuts. It also consumed other seeds, fruits and vegetable matter in smaller amounts. The diet of this species is likely to have been affected by the clearing of forests by early colonists for agriculture and cattle ranching as well as the felling of the yatay palm (Butia yatay) from which it may have gotten a lot of its food.
In the wild the Glaucous Macaw was commonly found in subtropical forests containing mountains and savannahs that were surrounded by palm trees where it nested in tree cavities, on rocky banks, or in the palm fronds' top. The young Glaucous Macaws rely on their parents to provide care until they fly and fully fledged. Both males and females are extremely committed to their offspring and will constantly hunt for food and shield them from predators.

The disappearance of this majestic bird is most likely due to the continuing trapping for the pet trade and disturbance of habitat, especially the wholesale removal of yatay palms where it could have gotten its main food supply. Breeding
Glaucous Macaws form monogamous pairs. Both parents are involved in the raising of their children. They breed in the dry season, when the food supply is at its highest. The female lays a clutch of two to three eggs, which are incubated for around 28 days. In the initial few weeks after hatching, the chicks are fed daily by their parents via regurgitation. The macaws' young begin to explore their surroundings and begin to learn to feed themselves. They also learn how to fly and hunt for food.
Like all birds, glaucous Macaws are social animals. They are active during daylight hours, and rest at night. They often seek refuge in tree cavities or other nesting spots to sleep. Their calls can be heard in the forest throughout the day.
While it is believed that the species will be able to recover from its decline in the wild, the bird is facing many threats, including loss of habitat illegal trapping for the pet trade and deforestation. About 20 glaucous macaws are estimated to be living in the wild. The IUCN has classified the bird as "Critically endangered--possibly extinct."
